March 2025 AI Developments Under the Trump Administration

This article is part of an ongoing series detailing AI policies, executive orders, and actions from the Trump Administration. This segment covers the AI advancements that took place in March 2025.

Public Comments on AI Action Plan

On March 15, the White House’s Office of Science & Technology Policy and the National Coordination Office closed the comment period for public input on the AI Action Plan. This was in response to a Request for Information (RFI) issued on February 6, aimed at gathering stakeholder feedback on the essential policy actions for the new AI Action Plan.

President Trump’s AI EO necessitated the collection of public comments concerning various topics, including data privacy, technical standards, and procurement, aimed at maintaining America’s leadership in AI. A total of 8,755 comments were received, and the final action plan is anticipated by July 2025.

NIST Initiatives for AI Standards

In March, the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) unwrapped several initiatives to bolster AI standards. On March 19, NIST initiated the GenAI Image Challenge to evaluate generative AI models, inviting participation from academia and industry.

Furthermore, on March 24, NIST released its final report on Adversarial Machine Learning, outlining guidance for fortifying AI systems against threats. NIST also launched the “AI Standards Zero Drafts project,” soliciting stakeholder input without a fixed deadline.

Leadership Confirmation

On March 25, the U.S. Senate confirmed Michael Kratsios as the Director of the Office of Science & Technology Policy. Kratsios, who previously played a notable role in delineating AI policy, received directives from President Trump to advance American technological supremacy in critical areas, particularly in AI.

Concerns Around DeepSeek

A growing concern regarding DeepSeek’s AI applications emerged, leading Congress and state officials to advocate for a ban on its use in government devices due to potential data privacy risks. The No DeepSeek on Government Devices Act was emphasized by various state officials, highlighting mounting apprehensions linked to DeepSeek’s operations.

Overall, March 2025 proved to be a significant month for AI developments under the Trump Administration, with a focus on public engagement, establishing standards, and tackling emerging security challenges.
