The AI image generation firm MidJourney has launched its latest flagship model V7, which aims to accelerate creative workflows with a new ultra-fast ‘Draft Mode’ for rapid ideation at lower cost. This new model marks a significant advancement as it introduces default personalization, allowing for tailored outputs to individual user preferences.

As the AI image generation field becomes more competitive, particularly after the viral success of OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 in 2023, MidJourney is taking steps to retain its market presence. OpenAI’s functionality saw rapid adoption, as CEO Sam Altman noted the company added ‘one million users in the last hour’ during the peak of interest, highlighting the growing trend in AI technology.

MidJourney’s V7 offers substantial technical upgrades over its predecessor, V6, with rendering speeds enhanced by 20–30%. Its architecture utilizes a combination of multimodal and parallel diffusion transformer blocks, scaled to 12 billion parameters, which helps in maintaining high-quality output during processing.

Among the significant features are improved multilingual capabilities and the ability to process prompts in various languages more effectively. David Holtz, the founder of MidJourney, hailed V7 as ‘the most intelligent, aesthetically pleasing, and coherent model to date,’ emphasizing its enhanced coherence for intricate details like human anatomy.

V7 also brings along user-focused enhancements. A new Draft Mode allows for 10x faster rendering and is 50% cheaper than standard operations. This mode includes a conversational interface and voice input support, streamlining the iterative design process. Users can activate this mode with a simple ‘–draft’ command, making it easier to generate rapid iterations of designs with lower quality but consistent aesthetics.

Despite these advancements, V7 has its limitations. Certain tasks, such as upscaling and editing, still rely on previous V6 models, indicating that while the technology is evolving, it is not without its challenges.
