Innovating healthcare through design
MILWAUKEE — Mount Mary University is continuously merging technology with healthcare through its innovative UX Design Department, overseen by Professor Mary Burton. This initiative is particularly noted for its emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) to solve significant challenges in the healthcare sector.
‘Applying the skills and being world-class problem solvers in any domain, we teach and provide tools to students to solve problems in ways that serve humanity,’ stated Burton.
Culturabot: Bridging cultural gaps
Leading this charge is UX Design student Galilea Jrnica, who has developed an AI tool named ‘Culturabot.’ This groundbreaking application is designed to support healthcare professionals in their interactions with patients, particularly focusing on eliminating cultural barriers and language misunderstandings.
‘Understanding them a bit more, with something that you may not be familiar with just because you don’t identify with that culture… but you want to help them in the best way you can,’ expressed Jrnica.
Enhancing patient experience
Occupational Therapy Doctoral student Jessica Meissner has also implemented the chatbot into her practice, enabling her to better connect with her patients. ‘Having resources that help you understand different aspects of each client is the best possible way to ensure each patient feels like their own person,’ she commented.
Future of AI in healthcare
As the field of UX Design progresses, the importance of utilizing AI continues to be emphasized. Burton noted, ‘Technology doesn’t lead humans, humans lead how technology is used in their day-to-day lives.’ This statement underscores the critical role that human-centered design plays in technology applications to achieve more meaningful healthcare interactions.
