Nebraska Medicine Sets New Standard in Patient Care

Nebraska Medicine Launches Innovation Design Unit to Revolutionize Patient Care

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Nebraska Medicine has unveiled its brand new Innovation Design Unit, aimed at reshaping the future of healthcare by integrating advanced technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), into patient care.

This innovative unit is not just a new facility; it will serve as a research hub where medical professionals can test new concepts for improving patient care. The focus is heavily placed on enhancing the patient experience through technology, encouraging greater patient involvement.

Dr. Chad Vokoun, medical director for the unit, explained, ‘…part of the screen will have everything a patient needs to know. A big question is: What’s today? What’s the schedule? Who’s coming?’ This transparent approach aims to keep patients informed and engaged.

Enhancing Staff Collaboration

The Innovation Design Unit also includes designated spaces for doctors and nurses to meet and discuss patient care systematically. This is vital for enhancing the collaboration needed to improve service delivery.

Furthermore, Nebraska Medicine has formed a partnership with an AI company to minimize the time medical staff spend on charting and paperwork. Dr. Vokoun emphasized the need for the ‘care unit of the future’ to center on human interactions, asserting, ‘…more of the technology should be invisible.’

Addressing Staffing Shortages

With the current nursing shortage affecting healthcare services nationwide, the integration of virtual technology that brings nurses into the patient care room is essential. Dr. Michael Ash, president and COO of Nebraska Medicine, stated, ‘There is definitely staffing shortages not limited to only nursing; and so one of the things we’re looking at is how we can re-look at staffing ratios.’

Education and Continuous Learning

The Innovation Design Unit will also play a key role in educating medical professionals. Utilizing virtual technology, students can learn outside traditional patient care settings. Dr. Ash noted, ‘We feel it will not only be a better experience for the patient themselves but a much better environment for the learners.’

Future Goals

Located next to patient rooms, the Innovation Design Unit is poised to adapt based on real-time feedback from patients, elevating healthcare standards. Dr. Vokoun summarized the vision, saying, ‘…we can make it more centered on the team, and I think the Innovation Design Unit is going to help figure out the best way to do that.’ He hopes for it to set a standard for healthcare for decades to come.
