Netflix Inc. is currently testing an innovative new search technology utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance the experience for its subscribers. This cutting-edge search engine enables users to look for shows and movies based on much more specific criteria, including their current mood.
According to the company, this AI-powered tool will recommend content from its vast catalog tailored specifically to the user’s emotional state.
Currently, the testing is available to select customers in Australia and New Zealand, though its rollout is expected to extend to additional markets, including the United States, shortly. It is currently restricted to iOS device users.
This new capability allows subscribers to inquire in ways that surpass traditional searches based solely on genres or actors’ names. Netflix has historically leveraged artificial intelligence and machine learning for various functions, particularly its recommendation algorithms, which analyze viewing history to suggest titles.
In addition to enhancing the user experience, Netflix’s management is actively exploring further applications of AI technology for its internal operations and filmmaking processes. Co-Chief Executive Officer Ted Sarandos has emphasized that while AI will significantly assist in filmmaking, it will not replace creative professionals, including screenwriters or actors.
Despite the potential advantages, company leadership is aware of the concerns surrounding AI’s implications in the industry. Various stakeholders in Hollywood have expressed apprehension regarding the possibility of job reductions tied to the growing use of artificial intelligence.
When Netflix typically rolls out new features, they are immediately made available to customers. In this instance, however, subscribers will need to opt-in to test the feature, showcasing a more cautious approach to the introduction of AI technology.
