In a significant move to enhance the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, leading institutions in New Mexico have joined forces to establish the New Mexico Artificial Intelligence Consortium. This initiative aims to advance the state’s efforts in AI research, economic growth, and education.
The consortium includes prestigious members such as Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, The University of New Mexico (UNM), New Mexico State University (NMSU), New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NM Tech), Central New Mexico Community College (CNM), and the New Mexico Consortium.
Jason Pruet, director of the National Security AI Office at Los Alamos, stated, ‘This collaboration between the laboratories and universities of New Mexico will strengthen our ability to harness the potential of artificial intelligence for solving our most important challenges in science and security.’
Each partner institution brings unique strengths to the consortium. Sandia National Labs excels in AI security, while Los Alamos National Lab offers expertise in high-performance computing and data analysis. Together, they will share resources that will enhance the computational power necessary for AI development.
Additionally, Jen Gaudioso, director at Sandia National Laboratories, remarked, ‘By uniting New Mexico’s premier research institutions, we’re creating an ecosystem that will accelerate breakthroughs in AI while ensuring these technologies are robust, secure, and beneficial to society.’
The consortium is not only focused on technological development but also aims to provide educational resources to state residents. Melanie Moses, a professor at UNM, emphasized, ‘AI will have a tremendous impact on research and education around the world. The NM AI Consortium will work to ensure that New Mexicans understand the risks and benefits of this new technology.’
UNM, NMSU, NM Tech, and CNM will collaborate on workforce development initiatives, with CNM already offering a certificate program in AI and Machine Learning. NMSU’s dean, Enrico Pontelli, stated, ‘The collective talent has the potential of placing New Mexico on the national map as a leader in AI.’
By working collaboratively, the institutions also plan to engage with industry, supporting AI startups and fostering economic diversification.
