Nicole Aschoff’s Lecture on AI and the Future of Work

The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education hosted its annual winter lecture featuring Nicole Aschoff, who provided a compelling analysis of artificial intelligence and its potential impact on jobs. The event, held in memory of the late Leo Panitch, focused on the challenges and opportunities that AI presents to the workforce.

Aschoff argued that while many believe artificial intelligence threatens traditional employment, it is essential to recognize the power of workers to influence and shape the future of work. ‘Artificial intelligence will bring the final destruction of good jobs. Soon all jobs will be subject to elimination or degradation! Or so we are told. This technologically determinist vision, while pervasive, ignores the power of working people to shape the future,’ she stated.

The discussion examined the nature of AI and its role in restructuring the workplace, encouraging ordinary individuals to fight for control over their labor conditions. The evening included a Q&A session with the audience, inviting further engagement on this critical topic for the modern economy.
