The Northeast Frontier Railway Takes Action
GUWAHATI: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has initiated several measures by leveraging AI-powered technology to protect railway land from illegal activities and encroachments. As part of these efforts, NFR has procured 45 drone cameras to enhance surveillance and monitoring of railway land across the region.
Advancements in Monitoring
To further strengthen this capability, dedicated AI-based software is currently under development. This advanced system will facilitate the detection of fresh encroachments, such as huts, houses, and other unauthorized structures, by conducting aerial surveys. This initiative ensures strict enforcement against unauthorized occupation of railway land.
Recent Eviction Drives
In recent months, the Railway Protection Force has successfully vacated 210 railway quarters from illegal occupants. During the months of February and March, efforts included dismantling 27 unauthorized soft structures, four unauthorized shops, and several kutcha structures, particularly in the New Guwahati and Pandu areas. These eviction drives were carried out through coordinated efforts of RPF personnel, engineering and electrical staff, and local police.
Mission 250+
Following these successful evictions, the next phase, termed ‘Mission 250+’, has commenced, aiming to vacate more than 250 additional railway quarters from unauthorized occupants within the New Guwahati Railway Colony.
Future Plans for Railway Quarters
To ensure long-term protection and better utilization of vacated railway quarters at New Guwahati, several remedial measures have been proposed. Plans include merging two Type-I quarters into larger Type-II units for more spacious living accommodations for railway employees. Furthermore, fencing of every four-unit block is planned to enhance security for both property and residents, according to a press release.
