Kazu Gomi introduces the PAI Group at NTT Research

NTT Launches New AI Research Group

On April 9, 2025, NTT Research announced at its annual Upgrade event the creation of a new AI-focused research group, the Physics of Artificial Intelligence Group (PAI). This initiative aims to deepen the understanding of AI technology, building on the company’s Physics of Intelligence vision established last year in partnership with Harvard University.

Headed by Hidenori Tanaka, an expert in physics, neuroscience, and machine learning, the PAI Group strives to improve human-AI collaboration through interdisciplinary research.

Goals and Collaborations

The group will continue the previous work initiated by the PHI Lab, focusing on understanding the ‘black box’ challenges of AI and promoting trust and safety in AI implementation. The PAI Group employs an interdisciplinary approach, integrating insights from neuroscience and psychology to shape safer AI adoption.

Collaborations include ongoing partnerships with esteemed institutions such as Harvard University, Princeton University, and Stanford University, enhancing research efforts through shared expertise and resources.

AI Inference Chip for 4K Video Processing

At the same event, NTT also unveiled its latest AI inference chip designed for real-time 4K video processing. This technology enables ultra-high-definition video analysis at 30 frames per second while consuming significantly less power than conventional AI systems.

Examples of use include advanced drone capabilities, allowing operators to detect objects from heights of up to 150 meters, enhancing applications in infrastructure inspection and public safety.

Conclusion

As AI technology continues to evolve rapidly, NTT Research’s efforts aim to ensure that advancements in AI are met with a focus on ethical implications and practical applications. With initiatives like the PAI Group, the integration of AI into society seeks to foster trust and collaboration between humans and machines, paving the way for a source of innovation that prioritizes safety and ethical standards.
