OpenAI has established itself as a leading player in the global AI landscape with innovations such as ChatGPT and its recent o3 reasoning models. Now, the organization is reportedly re-entering the realm of robotics, with a focus on developing humanoid robots, as reported by The Information.

Despite its prominent position in artificial intelligence, OpenAI has a history of significant accomplishments in robotics. Prior to 2021, it operated a dedicated robotics division, which undertook projects like training robotic arms to solve Rubik’s cubes and the development of Roboschool, a suite of simulation tools aimed at enhancing robot training.

However, the robotics division was disbanded as OpenAI redirected its focus towards AI systems refinement. With recent advancements in technology, OpenAI appears to have rekindled its interest in robotics.

Recently, OpenAI has invested in startups such as Figure and 1X, both specializing in humanoid robots. Figure’s latest creation, the Figure 02, has been tested in industrial environments, including BMW’s facilities, where it successfully moved heavy components. 1X, on the other hand, is developing consumer-focused robots designed for household assistance.

OpenAI’s capabilities extend to creating custom AI chips and collaborating with industry leaders like Broadcom and TSMC to develop processors optimized for AI functionalities. Such advancements could significantly enhance the performance of AI systems, including those integrated into humanoid robots.

Historically, humanoid robots have been celebrated in science fiction, where they are portrayed either as threats or helpers to humanity. The design of humanoid robots, which resembles human physical attributes, positions them as flexible tools capable of functioning in human-centric environments. They hold promise in various applications, including household assistance and more strenuous tasks in industrial settings.
