AI-generated patient communication

Patients Prefer AI Communication, but Transparency Remains Key

A recent study published in JAMA Network Open sheds light on patient preferences for communications from artificial intelligence (AI) versus human clinicians. Conducted within the Duke University Health System’s patient advisory committee, the study surveyed 1,455 patients regarding their experiences with AI-generated responses to electronic communications.

AI’s Edge Over Human Responses

The findings indicate a slight preference among patients for AI-generated messages in terms of satisfaction and perceived usefulness. Interestingly, satisfaction declined when participants were informed that a response was AI-generated. However, they reported higher satisfaction when the messages were presented as human-written or when there was no disclosure about the authorship.

Approximately 75% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the messages received, highlighting a general acceptance of AI in healthcare communication, albeit with a significant condition regarding transparency.

Ethical Considerations in AI Communication

The ethical implications surrounding the use of AI in patient communication remain a topic of discussion.
The guidelines from the White House’s Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights emphasize the importance of transparency in AI-assisted interactions.

Plausibly, too much technical disclosure may stir unnecessary concern among patients. A recommended approach from the study suggests using clear, brief disclosure statements; for example, ‘This message was written by Dr. T with the support of automated tools’ was favored by 33% of study participants.

As healthcare settings increase the use of online portals for communication, leveraging AI-generated responses presents opportunities to alleviate physician workload and address routine inquiries more efficiently. Nonetheless, effective communication of AI’s role is crucial to maintain trust and adhere to ethical standards.

Future Directions in AI-Patient Interactions

Researchers advocate for further exploration into how comfort levels with AI evolve and the dependence on different clinical scenarios. Balancing the efficiency of AI with patient autonomy and trust is paramount as healthcare progresses amidst technological advancements.
