Philips and Mayo Clinic Join Forces to Revolutionize Cardiac MRI
In a significant move towards advancing cardiac imaging technology, Royal Philips and Mayo Clinic announced a collaboration focused on leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance MRI capabilities for heart disease detection and management. This partnership aims to streamline complex MRI procedures, ultimately improving patient care.
The collaboration will harness the expertise of Mayo Clinic physicians alongside Philips’ AI technology to optimize workflows and increase operational efficiency for radiologists. ‘By applying AI at every stage of a cardiac MRI exam, we intend to expand access and greatly improve the patient experience,’ said Ioannis Panagiotelis, Ph.D., Business Leader of MRI at Philips.
The Challenge of Cardiac Conditions
Ischemic heart disease, which is a leading global cause of mortality, places a substantial burden on healthcare infrastructures. Currently, cardiac MRI is a crucial diagnostic tool, particularly beneficial for congenital heart disease and other heart muscle disorders. However, its high costs limit access, prompting the need for advancements in technology.
AI Enhancements Promising Better Access
This research will harness proprietary AI technologies from both institutions to potentially reduce MRI scan times. The project will also explore lower-field-strength MRI solutions to broaden the accessibility of MRI in various healthcare settings, particularly for patients with certain implants.
Philips has a reputation for innovation in sustainable MRI technology, having introduced helium-free operations that have saved significant resources worldwide. Through this collaboration with Mayo Clinic, they aim to pave new ground in improving cardiac care.
