Procore Technologies, a leading technology partner for every stage of construction, has released its first-ever Future State of Construction Report. This report provides a data-driven overview of the key trends and challenges expected to shape the construction industry over the next decade.

Pursuing extensive research and expert analysis from renowned voices in the field, the report draws on survey data from more than 1,200 construction decision-makers in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It thus offers a global perspective on the emerging trends and challenges the industry faces.

Key Insights from the Future State of Construction Report:

  • AI and Automation are Revolutionizing Productivity: The report highlights that AI and automation are crucial for enhancing productivity, noting that 18% of project time is currently lost in data searches, while 28% is attributed to rework. More than half of construction leaders believe automation will impact the sector within five years, with AI-enhanced preconstruction tools and automation helping reduce inefficiencies, improve planning, and boost return on investment.
  • Transforming Workforce Dynamics: A generational shift is occurring in the construction workforce, with estimates that 53% of workers may retire by 2036. In response, 47% of firms report they have implemented upskilling programs, and 41% plan to do so in the next year. With 60% of workers identifying career advancement and financial growth as key motivators, mental health initiatives are also highlighted, as 45% of workers cite burnout as a primary factor for leaving the industry.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: A significant 80% of construction executives find connected historical data essential for project success, yet 76% of civil and infrastructure builders admit they are not fully utilizing their data capabilities. The report suggests that AI-driven insights can optimize scheduling and workforce allocation, while the application of human expertise remains critical.
  • Digital Tools in Design: Nearly half of construction professionals surveyed expect increased reliance on Building Information Modeling (BIM) for design collaboration. As builders take a more proactive approach in the design process, tools like digital twins and AI simulations allow for design optimization before construction begins.

Procore’s Global Technology Evangelist, Kris Lengieza, remarked, “Companies leveraging AI, automation, and data are unlocking new efficiencies and improving safety to build a more resilient industry. However, the real heart of technology advances remains the people who build. Their expertise will shape the outcome of our industry’s future. Procore aims to support the construction community in navigating this transformation.”
