The Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) unveiled its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Demonstration Center in the Changwon Industrial Complex, South Gyeongsang Province, on March 25. This strategic initiative marks a pivotal step towards achieving technological independence for Korea, as it seeks to diminish its reliance on CNC imports from Japan and Germany, which currently account for more than 90% of its supply.

The AI CNC facility, established in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the South Gyeongsang Province, and Changwon City, represents a significant investment totaling 30 billion won. The center aims to evaluate the performance of machine tool products and enhance collaboration among industry companies to improve the comprehensiveness of CNC technology. By 2030, the center plans to localize over 50% of CNCs distributed within South Gyeongsang Province, thereby achieving an annual import substitution effect of 300 billion won.

CNC technology automates the control of machining tools via computers, serving as the “brain” in manufacturing processes that produce other machinery. Although Korea is a prominent player in global machine tool production, its dependence on imported components has constrained its ability to create high value. Kim Nam-kyun, president of KERI, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating their goal is to instill confidence in the industry by producing high-quality CNCs that fulfill domestic demand while bolstering global market competitiveness.

The integration of AI technology into CNC systems is set to revolutionize manufacturing processes, as machine tools frequently face challenges due to outdated systems and inconsistent data. KERI’s approach includes securing reliable big data to advance these machine tools and promote smarter manufacturing practices. Looking ahead to 2030, KERI aims to establish over 500 AI factories in South Gyeongsang Province, projecting an economic impact of more than 1 trillion won annually.
