RFEF Investigates AI Integration for Enhanced Referee Performance in Spanish Football

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is at the forefront of adopting technological advancements in football officiating, recently hosting a pivotal meeting at Ciudad del Fútbol under the leadership of President Rafael Louzán. This meeting focused on the Arbitration System Reform Commission’s initiatives, bringing together stakeholders from various facets of Spanish football.

During the discussions, there was a strong consensus on the necessity to integrate technology more thoroughly into both men’s and women’s top-tier competitions.

A significant decision was made to investigate the possibilities of utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) tools specifically designed for refereeing in both Primera and Segunda División matches. The aim is to enhance data collection and analysis, improving the overall performance of officiating teams during games.

Furthermore, RFEF is preparing to formally request FIFA’s approval to implement the Football Video Support (FVS) system, with plans to introduce this technology in both Liga F and the Primera Federación, contingent on partnering with a qualified technology provider and adhering to specific technical requirements.

The integration of such tools is expected to enable match officials to make more informed decisions, thereby increasing objectivity in referee evaluations and match appointments.

The committee is set to explore various methodologies and tools for implementation in the upcoming weeks, with the next meeting scheduled for April 30.

Other topics on the agenda included the formation of a dedicated VAR referee corps and strategies for enhancing transparency in officiating processes.

The continued focus on these discussions in Las Rozas reflects RFEF’s commitment to maintaining high standards in officiating integrity and efficiency within Spanish football.
