Shanghai’s Vision for AI in Healthcare by 2027
(Yicai) Dec. 25 — Shanghai is making significant strides to become a global center for artificial intelligence in healthcare, with plans to enhance the integration of advanced technology in the medical field. The city is focusing on key sectors including clinical medicine, healthcare management, public health, health insurance supervision, drug development, and traditional Chinese medicine.
Strengthening Technological Foundations
According to a plan released recently, Shanghai aims to strengthen its technological foundations through advancements in large language models, computing power, and core technologies. As part of this initiative, the city will also establish platforms for sharing medical data and computing resources.
Creating a Supportive Ecosystem
Officials emphasized the need to cultivate market players and create a supportive ecosystem through enhanced supervision, funding, and talent development. Shanghai has already gained recognition as a leader in AI healthcare, benefiting from its concentration of medical resources.
Current AI Deployments in Healthcare
Several medical institutions in Shanghai have successfully deployed AI systems for surgical planning, allowing for the three-dimensional reconstruction of organs and lesions. Additionally, proposals have been made for a platform to screen and optimize innovative small-molecule drugs, aiming to boost the efficiency and success rate of new drug development.
Impressive Statistics
Currently, Shanghai is home to 34 companies focused on pharmaceuticals using AI. This includes 51 preclinical research projects and 14 clinical trials, representing a remarkable 60 percent and 47 percent of China’s total, respectively.
