Innovation in Baggage Handling: SITA and IDEMIA’s Partnership

SITA and IDEMIA Unite to Transform Baggage Handling with AI Technology

GENEVA – SITA, an air transport technology company based in Geneva, has announced a partnership with IDEMIA Public Security, a leader in digital technologies and biometrics from Courbevoie, France. The collaboration aims to enhance biometric and digital travel credential solutions, merging IDEMIA’s advanced computer vision technology with SITA’s expertise in baggage management.

As global air travel is on the rise, reaching 5.2 billion passengers in 2023, SITA highlights the need for improved operational efficiency in baggage handling. According to their Baggage IT Insights 2024 report, though mishandling rates decreased to 6.9 per 1,000 passengers, the industry still faces significant challenges.

The integration of computer vision technology is designed to enhance baggage tracking, reducing the likelihood of lost or delayed luggage. This innovation aligns with passenger demands for greater control over their baggage. Additionally, automation trends, such as self-bag drop systems utilized by 85% of airports, indicate a movement towards more efficient luggage handling processes.

Nicole Hogg, portfolio director for baggage at SITA, remarked: ‘The air transport industry is facing unprecedented challenges as passenger numbers continue to surge, with global traffic expected to double by 2040. Our partnership with IDEMIA is crucial in confronting these challenges by tackling baggage handling inefficiencies.’

Furthermore, the partnership aims to improve operations across airports, airlines, and governments by encouraging interoperability and security, minimizing the need for complex system integrations.

Gaurav Gupta, senior vice president of IDEMIA, stated: ‘We are committed to enhancing the baggage handling experience for air transport and passengers. IDEMIA is proud to partner with SITA in this endeavor.’
