Thailand on the Brink of an AI Revolution: Insights and Projections

Thailand on the Brink of an AI Revolution

As the world continues to embrace advancements in technology, Thailand is positioned to witness a significant boom in artificial intelligence (AI). According to a report from the Digital Economy Promotion Agency, the country’s AI market is expected to grow to 114 billion baht by 2030.

The availability of small language models (SLMs) and the rise of open-source AI models are set to make generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) increasingly accessible to various organizations. Data intelligence platform Statista has projected that the Thai GenAI market will reach approximately $180 million in 2024, with an impressive annual growth rate of 46.5%. By 2030, this figure could soar to $1.77 billion.

Benefits of Generative AI

Generative AI technology allows for the creation of diverse content types, including text, images, and audio. Juhi McClelland, managing partner for IBM Consulting in Asia-Pacific, pointed out that while general-purpose large language models (LLMs) have their advantages, SLMs can offer cost efficiencies by reducing computing needs for specialized industries.

According to McClelland, scaling GenAI requires businesses to select appropriate models tailored to their specific use cases, considering performance, cost efficiency, and trust.

Workforce Development

As businesses explore the potential of AI, a skilled workforce becomes essential. Vatsun Thirapatarapong, country manager of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Thailand, emphasized the importance of training to support the growth of AI capabilities in the country. AWS aims to train 100,000 individuals in Thailand by 2026 to meet the rising demand for AI talent.

The government is also playing a vital role in this transformation, with initiatives aimed at prioritizing digital economy advancements across various sectors, including banking, healthcare, and manufacturing.

Future Outlook

As Thailand continues to pave the way for generative AI adoption, industry leaders like Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, envision a future where AI becomes integral to workplace productivity and efficiency. With open-source models leading the charge, Thailand’s AI landscape looks promising as it evolves into a competitive digital economy.

In conclusion, the upcoming years are crucial for Thailand as it embraces AI, and for businesses to effectively implement these technologies, a focus on cost, trust, and skilled personnel will be paramount.
