AI: A Catalyst for Change in Pittsburgh

The Impact of AI on Pittsburgh’s Economy: A Regional Transformation

In what many refer to as ‘The AI Revolution,’ Pittsburgh is poised to harness cutting-edge technology that may reshape its economic landscape. Groundbreaking research led by institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University has placed Pittsburgh at the forefront of AI and robotics, leading to the emergence of numerous startups specializing in diverse applications, from autonomous vehicles to AI-powered language learning platforms.

However, despite these advancements, Pittsburgh has struggled to translate its technological innovations into significant job creation and economic growth. The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic saw a decline in both jobs and population within the city. Yet, local leaders are optimistic about the potential for the AI revolution to revitalize the region.

Jay Katarincic, co-lead of Pittsburgh’s newly established AI Strike Team, remarked, ‘Absolutely, it’s not too late, and people are starting to recognize our time is now.’ This sentiment echoes in East Liberty, also known as ‘AI Avenue,’ where numerous startups thrive.

The concentration of AI firms in this area includes prominent names like Duolingo and Google, but competition from neighboring states, such as Ohio, which recently lured a $20 billion microchip facility, poses a challenge.

To enhance Pittsburgh’s competitive standing, Katarincic and Joanna Doven are collaborating with business, academic, and governmental entities under the Pittsburgh AI Strike Team to attract similar developments. ‘We have a moment in time to catapult our region in terms of job growth and business investment by leveraging our assets in AI,’ stated Doven.

Powering AI technology requires substantial energy resources, prompting investors to plan for converting the recently closed Homer City coal plant into a $10 billion natural gas facility, intended to support a large AI data center. Pennsylvania’s Governor Josh Shapiro has expressed his ambition to leverage the state’s energy and AI research capabilities to foster new industries: ‘I want to make sure we win the battle of AI here in America and we don’t let China beat us on that front.’

Progress is already being made in job creation, as AI company Hellbender announced plans to expand operations on AI Avenue. Greg Perelman of Walnut Capital noted the positive impact, stating, ‘The great thing about Hellbender is they hire a ton of veterans. There’s going to be 75-100 people working in this space.’

Transforming research into tangible economic benefits remains a significant challenge. Nevertheless, leaders are optimistic, asserting that a coordinated approach could enable Pittsburgh to leverage its technological advancements into a future of job growth and economic stability.
