The Rise of AI-Powered PCs and Laptops in 2024

The Influx of Intelligent PCs in 2024

In 2024, artificial intelligence (AI) technology has become an integral part of personal computing, transforming laptops and PCs into intelligent machines capable of handling complex tasks. The previous year saw the concept of AI PCs emerge, but this year has ushered in a significant influx of devices that can manage real-world AI workloads, including notable movements from Apple.

Apple’s foray into AI capabilities with its Apple Intelligence program has provided enhanced options for users seeking portable laptops with intelligent features, ensuring even models from three years ago gained comprehensive AI functionality.

Intel and Qualcomm Lead the Charge

The initial wave of AI PCs launched this year was powered by Intel’s first-generation Core Ultra processors, equipped with dedicated neural processing units (NPUs). Although these NPUs delivered 11 trillion operations per second (TOPS), their capabilities were limited, resulting in a somewhat rudimentary AI experience.

Qualcomm also made strides with its Copilot+ branding for Windows laptops. While these machines closely resembled their x86 counterparts in looks, they were powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite/Plus chips, creating a new category of devices.

However, users faced compatibility issues with various applications, as x86 apps struggled to transition smoothly to ARM-based environments. This led to a mix of app performance that ranged from functioning optimally to outright failures.

Microsoft’s venture into the Copilot+ PC market had its hurdles too, with the inability to deliver promised AI experiences like ‘Recall.’ This raised concerns over data security and trust among users.

Apple’s Surprising Advantage

In contrast to the emerging AI PCs, Apple’s approach proved to be a silent game-changer. While new Windows laptops required significant investments, many existing Macs received the latest Apple Intelligence features, extending their lifecycle without the need for additional purchases.

The affordability of models like the MacBook Air M1 and M2, combined with long-term software support and premium performance, made them attractive alternatives as AI tools became part of the standard experience.

As technology continues to evolve, 2024 stands out as a pivotal year for both PCs and Macs, particularly with improvements set to reshape what users expect from their personal computing devices in the near future.

Looking Ahead

As we approach CES 2025, anticipation builds for further advancements in AI technology and its potential to enhance performance across various sectors. The innovations made this year lay a strong foundation for what is yet to come, with a focus on creating smarter, more efficient devices that can cater to the demands of users worldwide.
