Tyson Fury and the Controversy of AI Judging in Boxing

Tyson Fury has voiced his strong disapproval of the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the judging of boxing matches. This reaction came after his recent encounter with Oleksandr Usyk in a high-stakes heavyweight title rematch that took place in Riyadh. The fight was significant not only for its competitive edge but also for featuring the first AI judge in boxing history, an initiative developed by The Ring Magazine and Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority in Saudi Arabia.

As part of this unprecedented experiment, the humanoid AI judge declared, ‘I am the first-ever AI boxing judge,’ and expressed its mission to ensure fairness within the ring. ‘I analyze every round, every move, and every decisive moment during the fight,’ it explained. However, the AI’s assessment deviated sharply from those of the human judges, who each scored the bout 116-112 in favor of Usyk. The AI judge had a more favorable view of Usyk’s performance, awarding him a score of 118-112, giving Fury only two rounds.

Fury’s reaction at the post-fight press conference reflected his disdain for the AI’s role, stating: ‘Well by the review of that, absolutely s**t. F**k all the computers. Keep the humans going, more jobs for humans and less jobs for computers.’

Fury’s comments underline a critical viewpoint within the boxing community regarding the reliance on AI technology in officiating matches. This controversy continues to ignite discussions about the future of sports and technology integration, particularly in an industry where human judgment and experience have long been paramount.
