Learning from Ukraine’s AI Innovations
On January 10, 2025, a cross-party group of MPs in the UK called for urgent action from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to develop and integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into national defence initiatives. In a report released by the Commons’ Defence Committee, the MPs highlighted how Ukraine has successfully leveraged AI technologies on the battlefield against Russia.
The Current State of AI in UK Defence
The committee pointed out that AI in Britain is currently “under-developed and requires cultivation.” MP Emma Lewell-Buck emphasized the importance of moving quickly to incorporate AI, stating, ‘Artificial intelligence in defence is here to stay – the UK must move fast to avoid falling behind.’
Advantage of AI in Warfare
According to the report, the use of AI in Ukraine has provided significant military advantages by enhancing capabilities in drone operations, intelligence analysis, and combat assessment against Russian forces. The MPs urged the UK to view AI as integral to its operations, pressing for a transformation within the MoD to become an “AI-native” organization.
A Call for Strategic Focus
Ms. Lewell-Buck stated, ‘Our inquiry discovered a gap between the Ministry of Defence’s rhetoric and reality on AI.’ She noted that while the MoD acknowledges AI’s importance, actual implementation has been lacking. With global threats escalating, she warned of the urgency for action.
Looking Ahead
The Government’s strategic defence review offers a critical opportunity for the MoD to harness AI effectively, with results expected in the early half of 2025. The committee’s recommendations aim to position the UK as a leader in defence AI applications without directly competing with technological powers like China and the USA.
The report underlines how essential it is for the UK to advance its technology in the face of intensifying global challenges.
