University of Nebraska Foundation Receives $250,000 Gift from Google

The University of Nebraska Foundation is set to receive a significant $250,000 gift from Google aimed at advancing research and education in artificial intelligence (AI) across the university system. This announcement was made at an event held on the Nebraska Innovation Campus at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln on Monday.

This generous donation is part of a broader initiative by Google to support educational institutions in Nebraska. The funding will enable faculty and students to work with state-of-the-art AI technologies, solidifying the university’s role as a leader in innovation in this rapidly evolving field.

During the morning event, Google also revealed plans for $930 million in infrastructure investments in the state, designed to expand its data center operations in Lincoln, Papillion, and Omaha. These developments are expected to enhance the demand for Google Cloud and support the company’s diverse offerings in AI and digital technology.

University of Nebraska President Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. remarked, ‘The University of Nebraska is proud to celebrate with Google as they make a transformative investment in our state and in our future. Their generous gift to the university underscores our shared commitment to harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to ensure we remain at the forefront of research, teaching, and public engagement.’

Expanding AI Education

This investment arrives as the University of Nebraska intensifies its efforts to explore the potentials of AI. Earlier in the year, the university launched a new undergraduate degree program focused on generative AI, developed in collaboration with the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Each of the four NU campuses is enhancing AI-related programs and leveraging new technologies to foster teaching and innovation.

President Gold added, ‘The University of Nebraska’s work in AI, including the work that will be possible because of this investment, is critical to our vision for the future. As we strive to be an exceptional university system, we must also strive to be a trailblazer in understanding, using, and advancing new technologies including AI.’
