US and India Forge New AI Partnership to Enhance Strategic Technology Cooperation

On January 6, the United States and India announced plans to enhance their collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI). The commitments were made during a significant meeting in New Delhi attended by high-ranking officials from both nations, including U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In an official statement from the White House, it was revealed that the countries would work on developing a government-to-government framework aimed at promoting reciprocal investments in AI technology. Furthermore, both nations expressed their intention to align protections regarding the diffusion of this critical technology.

During the meeting, the focus on national security applications of AI was emphasized, highlighting the commitment to the safe, secure, and trustworthy advancement of AI technologies. Sullivan and Doval have been engaging regularly, promoting initiatives surrounding AI and other technologies since the launch of the India-U.S. Initiative on Critical and Emergency Technologies (iCET) in May 2022.

Aside from AI, the discussion covered collaboration across a range of fields including space technology, defense innovation, industrial cooperation, clean energy, critical minerals, and semiconductors. Following the meeting, the Indian Prime Minister’s Office stated that Modi reiterated India’s commitment to bolstering cooperation with the United States.

Significantly, in June, tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft announced substantial investments in India’s AI initiatives, demonstrating the growing interest in the sector. Microsoft is planning to invest approximately $3.7 billion in data centers in Telangana, while Amazon aims to direct around $12.7 billion into cloud infrastructure in India before 2030.

This initiative marks a pivotal step in strengthening the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, particularly in the realm of AI.
