Generative AI Enhances Military Intelligence Gathering

In a groundbreaking test run, the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit conducted military exercises in the Pacific while implementing generative AI to both collect and interpret intelligence data effectively.

For much of last year, about 2,500 service members from this unit sailed throughout the Pacific, training near South Korea, the Philippines, India, and Indonesia. During their deployment, they experimented with a cutting-edge AI tool funded by the Pentagon to streamline their intelligence workflows.

Two officers from the unit reported significant improvements in their intelligence-gathering processes. According to Captain Kristin Enzenauer, she utilized large language models to translate and condense foreign news articles. In contrast, Captain Will Lowdon employed AI in the composition of daily and weekly intelligence briefings for their leadership.

While Captain Lowdon acknowledged the necessity of validating source accuracy, he stated that the unit’s commanders encouraged AI integration due to the enhanced efficiency it provided in fast-paced environments. This method allowed them to analyze substantial amounts of open-source intelligence swiftly.

The technology used in this project is developed by Vannevar Labs, which recently secured a production contract with the Pentagon valued at up to $99 million to expand the application of its intelligence tools across various military sectors. This development comes as part of a broader initiative within the U.S. military to embrace artificial intelligence to transform how data is collected, processed, and utilized.

Generative AI, particularly the models provided by Vannevar Labs, has the potential to engage in human-like conversations, making it a promising tool for military strategists. Vannevar has been aggressively collecting vast datasets of open-source intelligence, allowing for comprehensive analysis using advanced machine learning techniques.

As Generative AI technologies evolve, they are bolstering military capabilities by relieving human analysts from the arduous task of sifting through massive amounts of data while simultaneously accelerating the decision-making processes during critical situations.

Despite the advantages, experts caution about the implications of relying heavily on AI for military operations. Heidy Khlaaf, the chief AI scientist at the AI Now Institute, raised concerns regarding AI’s accuracy and the subjectivity inherent in tasks such as sentiment analysis. She commented on the risks of misinterpretation, stating that AI could perceive hostility where none exists, which may lead to inappropriate military actions.

In light of these potential pitfalls, military officials emphasize the importance of continued oversight and validation of AI-generated intelligence to ensure safety and effectiveness in operations. Nonetheless, with technological advancements accelerating rapidly, the U.S. military is set to further incorporate generative AI within its operational structure, paving the way for significant shifts in military strategy and intelligence gathering.
