The Rise of AI in the Workplace

In the technological world, the use of artificial intelligence has been rapidly changing. A recent study looking at workplace trends found that over half of Americans use AI in the workplace. It’s no longer just a futuristic concept but is reshaping a number of industries and even everyday life.

Meet Zite AI

Zite AI is a Champaign-based company focused on using artificial intelligence within the medical industry. The company, run by two brothers — Joshua and Jacob Love — operates out of the U of I’s Research Park Building.

“AI is not magic; it’s just a bunch of math,” Joshua said.

Joshua added that this could be the biggest obstacle for people when understanding artificial intelligence. He said the best thing people can do to get acquainted with the technology is to play with some of the AI tools that exist.

AI’s Impact on Healthcare

“More recently, we’ve kind of come across this huge problem where a lot of the back office, the sort of strategic side of medicine, making sure people get access to care at all is something that can really improve with more data and more understanding of what’s going on in the communities,” Jacob said.

Joshua said one of the big advantages of artificial intelligence, from a medical or clinical perspective, is that it’s extremely consistent. In recent medical trials, the algorithms have proven to diagnose patients faster than doctors.

“Healthcare systems were relying on very old-fashioned means of trying to determine what the needs of their communities were,” Joshua added.

AI in Medical Imaging

It’s no longer just assisting doctors; some of their programming can analyze medical images, identifying early signs of conditions like cancer and heart disease well before they are visible to the human eye.

“One of the things that’s important to understand about AI and the way it’s used and practiced is most AI algorithms are designed to work for a very specific purpose,” Joshua added.

Overcoming AI Anxiety

The founders say the anxiety around the unknown is always an obstacle, but that these programs are just that — programmed tasks.

“Something to keep in mind that everybody that’s working on these problems are familiar with these issues,” Jacob said.

The two say that although artificial intelligence has made big strides in the last two years, there are still hesitations into privacy and the overall safety of incorporating AI more and more into our daily lives.
