HONG KONG – Hollywood visual effects powerhouse Digital Domain has established a presence in the Hong Kong Science Park, announcing plans to build a global innovation and research center with a HK$200 million ($25.6 million) investment aimed at empowering various sectors through the latest artificial intelligence technologies.

The Hong Kong-based company is known for its visual effects in numerous Hollywood films, including Titanic and The Avengers.

According to the company, the investment is expected to be completed by the end of 2029, focusing on promoting AI virtual human technologies, visual effects, digital assets, and AI visual production.

Digital Domain aims to build a team of at least 40 professionals at the science park and plans to submit five patent applications in Hong Kong to accelerate scientific innovation and enhance intellectual property protection.

CEO Daniel Seah highlighted Hong Kong’s energetic atmosphere, its status as an international financial center, and its diverse cultures.

Seah stated that Digital Domain can significantly aid Hong Kong’s film and television industry in producing more visual effects, thereby consolidating the city’s reputation as the “Oriental Hollywood”.

The company also intends to expand the applications of AI virtual human technology into sectors such as banking, education, elderly services, and tourism.

During the ceremony, the company showcased the latest AI technology, inviting Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong to interact with an AI virtual human modeled after the late singer Teresa Teng Li-chun.

Sun mentioned that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government is prepared for the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, pledging support for the city’s AI industry and related research and development strategies.

Sun also announced that Hong Kong’s supercomputing center will be operational later this year, attracting over 100 technology companies to establish or expand their businesses in the region, many of which are leaders in AI.

These companies are expected to accelerate the growth of the local AI ecosystem and bring in professionals, technology, and funding.

With collaborative efforts, Sun believes Hong Kong can unlock the full potential of AI technology, enhancing the city’s innovation and technology development, and injecting new energy into the local film industry while offering a fresh digital entertainment experience to audiences both locally and abroad.
