In a strategic move to bolster SK Group’s position in the global AI and semiconductor markets, Chairman Chey Tae-won is set to embark on a trip to the United States. This visit aims to assess the current landscape and explore potential business opportunities within these rapidly evolving sectors.

Meetings with Big Tech

Chairman Chey’s itinerary includes meetings with key figures from major U.S. technology companies, commonly referred to as ‘Big Tech.’ This trip comes two months after his meeting with Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, at the company’s headquarters in San Jose in April. Accompanying Chairman Chey on this trip are key executives from SK Group’s AI and semiconductor sectors, including Yoo Young-sang, President of SK Telecom, and Kim Joo-sun, President of SK Hynix.

Strategic Locations

The regions Chairman Chey will visit include San Jose’s Silicon Valley and various other locations in the U.S. where local partner companies are situated. SK Group is fostering a comprehensive AI ecosystem, from semiconductors to services, and this trip is expected to seek collaboration with global companies based on this ecosystem.

Building a Global Network

In a statement, an SK Group official highlighted the strategic importance of these visits: “Chairman Chey Tae-won is making efforts to build a global network to strengthen AI and semiconductor business competitiveness by visiting the U.S. in April, Taiwan in June, and now the U.S. again.”

On June 6, Chairman Chey met with Mark Liu, the new Chairman of TSMC, in Taiwan, emphasizing SK’s AI direction focused on ‘people.’ This meeting underscored SK Group’s commitment to developing AI technologies that benefit humanity. “Let’s build the foundation for AI that helps humanity together,” Chairman Chey remarked during the meeting.

AI and Semiconductor Initiatives

SK Group’s AI initiatives are supported by its robust semiconductor capabilities. SK Hynix is leading the global AI memory market with competitive products such as high bandwidth memory (HBM), high-capacity DDR5 modules, and enterprise SSD (eSSD). Additionally, SK Telecom’s generative AI service “A.” has attracted nearly 4 million subscribers with its differentiated personal assistant features.

Clean Energy Solutions

The group’s “Clean Energy Solution” is also gaining attention as an alternative for securing clean energy and reducing power usage for data centers, aligning with the growing emphasis on sustainable energy practices in the tech industry.

Commitment to Competitiveness

An SK Group official further elaborated on the company’s commitment: “We will spare no time and resources in enhancing national competitiveness and solidifying leadership in the increasingly competitive AI and semiconductor fields.”

Future Prospects

Chairman Chey’s trip to the U.S. is part of a broader strategy to build a global network and strengthen SK Group’s AI and semiconductor business competitiveness. This initiative is crucial for maintaining and enhancing South Korea’s position in these high-tech industries, which are pivotal for the country’s economic future.

As Chairman Chey continues his efforts to forge international collaborations, the outcomes of his meetings with global tech leaders will be closely watched. The strategic partnerships and insights gained from this trip are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future direction of SK Group’s AI and semiconductor endeavors.
