Funding for Enhanced Safety

The Departments of Energy and Commerce are set to receive a total of $13.8 million from the Technology Modernization Fund (TMF). This funding aims to bolster nuclear emergency response capabilities and establish safety standards for artificial intelligence (AI).

The Energy Department will utilize $3.8 million to upgrade its radiological response data portal, which is essential for the operations of the Nuclear Emergency Support Team. Meanwhile, the Commerce Department will allocate $10 million towards the development of its AI Safety Institute, an initiative under the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) aimed at assessing AI risks and creating guidelines for mitigation.

Importance of AI Safety

Representative Haley Stevens of Michigan emphasized the significance of this funding, stating, “In order to remain competitive, while keeping Americans safe, funding the AI Safety Institute is critical. While I’m glad the AI Safety Institute received a one-time grant from the Technology Modernization Fund, truly investing in AI safety requires consistent and sufficient appropriations.”
