Around one in five people in the US believe that artificial intelligence is already sentient, while around 30 percent think that artificial general intelligences (AGIs) capable of performing any task a human can are already in existence. Both beliefs are false, suggesting that the general public has a shaky grasp of the current state of AI – but does it matter?
Public Perception vs. Reality
Jacy Reese Anthis at the Sentience Institute in New York and his colleagues asked a nationally representative sample of 3500 people in the US their perceptions of AI. The results were surprising, revealing a significant gap between what experts know and what the public believes.
Why Does This Misconception Exist?
One possible reason for this misconception is the portrayal of AI in media and entertainment. Movies and TV shows often depict AI as self-aware entities, leading people to believe that such technology is already here.
Does It Matter?
Yes, it does. Misunderstanding the capabilities and limitations of AI can lead to unrealistic expectations and fear. It can also influence policy decisions and public opinion in ways that may not be beneficial.
What Can Be Done?
Education and clear communication from experts are crucial. By providing accurate information and dispelling myths, we can help the public develop a more realistic understanding of AI.
