This article is part of a series following the Family Office “Cybersecurity and AI Summit in New York City.” It is authored by Chris Wake, founder of Atypical, who brings two decades of experience in aerospace, AI, and cybersecurity.
This series also appears in a 24-page publication by Family Wealth Report, examining various topics related to AI and cybersecurity.
Today, we will discuss three main topics: cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and their convergence. Archimedes famously said, “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.” This quote illustrates the concept of leverage, which is crucial in understanding AI’s potential.
AI serves as a form of leverage, offering near-infinite possibilities for individuals and organizations. However, this leverage can be both beneficial and detrimental, depending on how it is utilized.
Cybersecurity is fundamentally about protecting against unwanted attacks. Most breaches occur at the human-computer interface, where users interact with systems. Traditional defenses have evolved from requiring knowledge-based security (like passwords) to possession-based security (like authenticator apps).
AI plays a significant role in enhancing cybersecurity measures. It excels at pattern recognition, enabling it to identify trends and anomalies in vast datasets that humans may overlook. For instance, AI can quickly determine which elements do not belong in a given set, akin to the game “Which of these things is not like the other?” from Highlights magazine.
To maintain an effective security posture, organizations must focus on real threats and actionable steps. In today’s landscape, adversaries can leverage AI to exploit vulnerabilities, making it imperative for defenders to adopt similar strategies.
At Atypical, we invest in innovative solutions addressing foundational problems in cybersecurity. One investment focuses on identity verification through behavioral biometrics, ensuring continuous authentication of users. Another investment aims to enhance trust in payment systems, utilizing advanced AI to combat malicious uses of technology, such as deep fakes.
In conclusion, AI represents a powerful form of leverage. It is essential to recognize that while adversaries will use this leverage against us, we can also harness it to fortify our defenses.
