The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has initiated a competition to establish a new institute dedicated to leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to bolster the resilience of U.S. manufacturing.
This new institute, part of the Manufacturing USA network, is anticipated to receive up to $70 million in funding over the next five years, contingent on federal funding availability, as detailed in a release from NIST.
Why is this institute important?
According to Laurie Locascio, NIST director, “This new Manufacturing USA institute will strengthen the U.S. economy by helping manufacturers make smart use of AI to boost their productivity and increase their resilience in the face of supply chain disruptions and other unexpected events.”
What will the institute focus on?
The institute will concentrate on three primary areas: advancing technology development, cultivating an educated and skilled workforce, and creating shared infrastructure and facilities.
Who can apply for funding?
The funding opportunity is open to a variety of organizations, including higher education institutions, U.S.-based nonprofits, for-profits with majority U.S. ownership, and various government entities. Interested applicants must submit concept papers by the end of September.
What are the expectations for applicants?
NIST seeks applicants to clearly outline their intended outcomes and delivery timelines. Submissions must address a significant U.S. industrial need, demonstrate substantial industry support, and avoid duplicating existing Manufacturing USA institutes or the upcoming Digital Twins Institute for Semiconductor Manufacturing.
The competition will unfold in two phases: first, the submission of concept papers, followed by full proposals from the most promising concepts. NIST plans to host an informational webinar and an in-person event regarding this opportunity, with dates to be announced soon.
