Magdalena, a multifaceted professional who defies easy categorization, brings a unique blend of legal acumen and technological passion to her role. As AIQ’s legal compass, she manages the complex intersection of innovation and regulation, ensuring the company’s cutting-edge AI solutions remain both groundbreaking and compliant.

But Magdalena is far more than just a legal expert. A self-proclaimed “resilient, hardworking, inquisitive optimist,” she embodies the spirit of the tech industry itself—always pushing boundaries, questioning norms, and striving for progress. Her approach to life and work is refreshingly holistic; she’s as comfortable in the boardroom as she is in the gym, where she pursues her passion for bodybuilding.

“Technology is impactful, fast-paced, exciting, innovative, and creative,” she explains, her eyes lighting up as she discusses her chosen field. “It’s open to a diverse range of talent, which is crucial for driving true innovation.” Magdalena’s perspective on technology’s role in shaping geopolitics and societal relationships offers a glimpse into the mind of a true thought leader. She sees beyond the code and algorithms, recognizing the profound impact of each project on the fabric of human interaction.

As AIQ continues to push the boundaries of AI technology, Magdalena is playing her role, ensuring that progress and responsibility go hand-in-hand. In a world where technology and humanity are increasingly intertwined, leaders like Magdalena are not just shaping companies—they’re architecting our collective future.

Let us learn more about her journey:

Acknowledging Technology’s Transformative Potentials

AIQ was a vision of the leadership of ADNOC and G42 back in 2020, underpinning two of the UAE’s critical national strategies (AI and net-zero). Nearly four years on, AIQ combines its groundbreaking AI solutions for energy with Presight’s expansive cross-sector big data analytics and global market access, propelling the organization to the center of energy-focused AI innovation worldwide. They are an AI pioneer contributing to the evolution of the energy sector and beyond, globally.

Collaboration and Transformation

Magdalena had the privilege of working with brilliant innovators and great minds, collaborating on business transformations and technology implementations that will revolutionize businesses and create new inventions.

One unforgettable project involved the development of a limited edition supercar, a hybrid between on-the-road and on-the-race track. While the details cannot be disclosed, working on this project with talented STEM professionals and guiding the legal process was an extraordinary experience.

This experience has motivated her to continue working closely with innovators, helping them navigate the complexities of their groundbreaking ideas.

Journey from Legal Education to Business Transformation

Magdalena’s early career experience taught her that the reality of advising and working within a business could not be further from her legal education. She learned this through multiple secondments in different locations and industries, which she considers an invaluable experience for any lawyer. She was particularly struck by the critical phrase, “Don’t bring me problems, bring me solutions,” which she has adopted as a way of working in every aspect of her life.

Her exposure to a “growth mindset” through reading Carol Dweck’s book “Mindset” further enhanced her insights into challenges and success. This mindset encourages ongoing learning and seeking out new opportunities for professional growth, which aligns with her view that a company’s leadership mindset and culture are crucial. This is one of the reasons why she is drawn to the tech industry, as it fosters innovative thinking and the development of new solutions.

Challenges of Advanced Technology

The rapid pace of innovation in advanced technologies and AI presented significant challenges for the General Counsel. The sheer speed of technological change, coupled with the complex and evolving global regulatory landscape, makes it difficult to stay ahead of the curve.

One key challenge is the lack of a “one-size-fits-all” regulatory framework. AI and advanced technologies are developing faster than laws can keep up, requiring General Counsel to navigate a patchwork of regulations across different jurisdictions. Balancing the risks and potential ROI of these technologies within the business can be tricky.

Additionally, as a woman working in the male-dominated fields of law, energy, and technology enterprises, Magdalena has faced unique challenges. However, she has met these head-on, persistently asking, “Why can’t I?” and drawing strength from her determination, as echoed in Mark Twain’s words: “By trying, we can easily learn to endure adversity.”

Driving the Exponential Growth of AIQ

Magdalena is particularly proud of her role in establishing and structuring the joint venture between ADNOC and G42 that created AIQ. As the first member of AIQ’s personnel, she has been instrumental in the company’s groundbreaking growth and achievements to-date.

Under her legal, governance, and compliance leadership, AIQ has rapidly grown into a thriving business. In just a few years, it has become the fastest-ever unicorn in the region, generating significant revenue and expanding to a team of over 100 talented professionals across data science, software engineering, subject matter expertise, and more.

As a member of AIQ’s executive leadership team, Magdalena plays a key role in ideating, developing, and implementing the company’s core strategies. She has been fundamental to AIQ’s exponential growth and expansion, helping transform it into a leading provider of transformative AI solutions for the energy industry.

Managing the Rapidly Progressing Global AI Regulation Landscape

The velocity of innovation in advanced technologies and AI is staggering, making it challenging for policymakers and regulators to keep pace.

Magdalena recognizes the importance of independent education in this complex, nuanced space. While coding skills are not necessarily required, being able to fluently discuss technical details and ask the right questions is a significant advantage. For example, when her team enquires about commercializing an NLP model with potential overfitting issues, her deep understanding allows her to probe further and provide informed guidance.

As the global AI regulation landscape shifts daily, her membership on the DIFC Regulation 10 Advisory Committee enables her to stay at the forefront of emerging policies and frameworks. This direct engagement with policymakers and industry peers equips her to navigate the evolving compliance requirements and ensure her organization remains compliant and competitive.

From Legal Advisor to Strategic Business Partner

The role of the General Counsel has evolved significantly in recent years, moving beyond just providing legal advice and drafting contracts. As businesses faced increasing challenges from social, political, and economic changes, Magdalena has assumed a more strategic and leadership role within her organizations.

Magdalena actively contributes to shaping business strategy and decision-making at AIQ. Her responsibilities extend far beyond traditional legal duties. She has a critical role in questioning and testing internal decision-making to ensure integrity across all business decisions. She also helps facilitate the organization in meeting its vision, mission, and objectives.

This evolved role is immensely rewarding for her, as she leverages her legal expertise to drive the business forward. It has significantly enhanced her skillset, allowing her to make a direct impact on the company’s success.

AI: The Catalyst for a Sustainable Energy Future

In 2017, Bill Gates emphasized the importance of focusing on energy and AI, recognizing their symbiotic relationship and vast potential for driving sustainable change.

OpenAI’s Sam Altman echoed this sentiment, stating that to significantly improve the future, we must work on both intelligence and energy. Although still in its early stages, AI is enabling the Fourth Industrial Revolution and reshaping the energy sector, revolutionizing power generation, distribution, and consumption.

From smart grids and demand response management to predictive maintenance and emissions monitoring, AI is already transforming the industry, paving the way for a more efficient, sustainable, and secure energy future.

Soft Skills: The Key to Long-Term Career Success in AI

Research conducted by the Stanford Research Institute and the Carnegie Mellon Foundation reveals that 75% of long-term career success depends on soft skills such as grit, determination, adaptability, time management, and leadership. Magdalena believes this holds true in the AI sector and encourages curiosity, questioning, and continuous learning.

She emphasizes the importance of developing skills necessary to identify and grasp opportunities, along with honing communication, leadership, and emotional intelligence. She challenges herself and others to question the status quo and embrace unconventional and untried ideas.

By prioritizing the development of soft skills alongside technical expertise, professionals in the AI field can position themselves for long-term success. Her approach underscores the value of a growth mindset and the ability to adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of advanced technologies.

Transformative Potential of AI Across Industries

Super angel investor Andreessen Horowitz says, energy is the foundational engine of civilization; the more we have, the more people we can have, and the better everyone’s lives can be. That said, the opportunities for AI in other sectors are almost endless. Innovations will be led by AI’s ability to process vast amounts of data and learn.

We are going to see AI implementation in healthcare (diagnostics, personalizing treatments, and managing healthcare resources efficiently), environment (monitoring and predicting natural disasters), finance (automated trading, fraud detection, and personalized financial advice), education (personalized learning, virtual tutors, and adaptive learning platforms), R&D (analyzing huge datasets and simulating complex models), and transportation (autonomous vehicles, traffic management systems). The speed of such adoption may depend on that industry’s risk appetite.

The critical aspects of the success of such implementation will be the synergy between the business and technology strategy, ensuring a clear and concise AI strategy, governance and risk guardrails, and the organization’s culture and ability to manage change through strong leadership.
